ABOUT THE PAINTING:

TRANSPOSITIONS: Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 20 IN.

To transpose means to change the relative position or order, cause to change places, interchange. I don’t know how many layers I put in a piece. The paint just gets thicker and thicker. On the sides of the piece, you can feel the indentations and buildout where the canvas is lost and the paint has taken over its shape. What excites me about this process is the unveiling. Even though the entire piece has the same wash upon wash, each space and the way it reads takes on a whole different character. There’s an echo in the colors because they are the same but the sections have their own, unique personalities. When I first finished this piece I thought about doorways and different portals. When I looked further into it, I realized it wasn’t about possibilities but present states of being. So, to name it “Transpositions” seemed most appropriate to honor the process of its creation.
