ABOUT THE PAINTING:
MUTABLE: Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30 IN.
Mutable means liable or subject to change. This piece is about yellow. Of all the shades under the sun, it’s the one that loses its identity when mixed with another. A touch of red and it becomes a shade of orange, blue becomes a hue of green. Blue and red are bold colors. Yellow is vibrant but subtle in nature. It’s delicate and discerning, a generous color to lend itself to so many yet not be overbearing. This piece, though simple, was a complicated puzzle. How does one compose a yellow canvas yet still maintain an interesting theme? I sympathized with this piece. I begun questioning my own “yellow” qualities, my boundaries and circles. Being mutable and understanding with people, with situations, is kindness. But, at what point does that disposition lend itself to getting lost in the process? Where does one lose oneself gifting another with understanding before it causes hurt within yourself? When I was younger, the way I saw a piece as finished and separated myself from my work was to realize that each piece is a postcard from a certain space in my life. In that, I was easily able to move on because there was more to be done. MUTABLE is a perfect time capsule for where I’m at right now, as I venture forward on a new life and different future. Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” In an insane world which can change in the blink of an eye, you only have yourself, your actions and words you leave behind at the end of the day. So, I’ll continue being true to my “yellowness” as an empathetic soul. But, I’m going to have to be aware of not giving people more than they would in return. It’s been a most valuable lesson, golden if you will.
