INEFFABLE: Acrylic on canvas, 22 x 28 IN. Ineffable means incapable of being expressed or described in words, not to be spoken because of its sacredness. This word was given to me in what seems like several lifetimes ago by one of my first loves. And, yes, a word can be a gift, sometimes more precious than anything that’s fine cut and sparkles. A word, in and of itself, is just a scrambled set of broken symbols, hanging in the air as a bit of noise in an already noisy space. It’s the meaning behind the tone that gives it potency. When you get down to it, the words themselves mean nothing. The consideration behind them: the whispering of a lover or the confidence of a friend; these are everything. We use words with one another as a way to believe, a way to break-up the monochromatic structure of our daily routines and patterns. Then again, describing words leaves language impotent but they aren’t.
It’s said God created the world with a word. In science, it’s supposed nothingness was disrupted by a sudden, big bang. Sound has power. The vibration of the syllables we utter connects us in ways we will never fully understand. But, in the end, the use of them is sacred and undefinable. The more we try to describe who we are and communicate what we are trying to express, we are right in feeling speechless. In the end, our feels are best understood as the ever-illusive ineffable. Yet, the illuminating joy we have in stumbling through our syllables makes all the difference. And, for that, I am grateful for the gift of ineffable.
