It’s funny the things you remember and forget as the years slip by, especially when you’ve been long gone from the halcyon days of childhood and far removed from the lifestyle of your home state of mind.

In Texas, life revolved around backyard BBQs, piñon wood fires, beach towels and swimsuits. It’s not that Colorado is so different for the outdoors. It’s just different. Drives to a lake or reservoir usually involve a switchback or two with crisp mountains on the western horizon. When people tell ya to go take a hike, they usually mean clearing your head with rocky trails and evergreens. Parks are flooded with Canadian geese and picnicking. It’s a wonderful life, no matter which way ya slice it but there are days my pixelated memories of childhood are missed and I’d just enjoy floating in my parents’ pool, counting clouds while splashing away the clumps of purple Crape Myrtle leaves, until getting called in to decide what’s for dinner.

Designer Folding Screen

Tough, strong canvas

Nickel rivets on reverse

Panels fold accordion style

'Invisible' canvas hinges

Handmade to order

'Invisible' hinges for seamless effect

Durable wood frame armature

Long-lasting print & build structure

Sustainably printed

Choose from 2, 3 or 4 panels

Surface wipe only. I have carried it with me from high school when my Latin teacher would say it in a sing song manner while passing out weekly quizzes. Luck meant something different then and I find it an ever changing concept even now.

Luck, for me, is best defined with quotes these days, like Samuel Goldwyn saying, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” or the Seneca attribution of “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I guess it boils down to believing that we create our own luck. But, can that be the only reason such an idea is so important that it’s given a name, throughout history and cultures across oceans?

As I was finishing this piece, it was already sold and became a bit of a commission. I thought of this person, her family coin collectors and coins historically becoming talismans for luck. I looked up other talismans. What made those things bear significance, was it hope for or intention within? I imagined myself imbuing this piece with luck, through strokes of my paintbrush. I cannot say whether this piece will bring this person luck but I can say that I feel blessed that she had such immediate connection to this piece. I hope this blessing she gave follows her through this canvas and the lifetime they will now share. I don’t know if it’s an inordinate amount of time compared to others but, as I look back, seems I’ve always been that way. I like long drives in big loops with the windows down, sunroof back and music blaring. So, it doesn’t matter whether I’m sitting in peace or in motion, just as long as I feel the outdoors and soak in the moment. Somewhere along the way, in that open space, I realized that the horizon stretches at sunset. Maybe it’s the light that cascades up into the endless sky, a gasping last breath… maybe it’s the outline of the horizon which backlighting creates, tapering into a whisper… either way, the horizon stretches at sunset.

But, have you seen a brilliant sunrise? It’s soft, rosy. It’s a tender, tumbling prelude like a symphony warming up before a concert. I once saw a sunrise that looked as a serenade. The glow grew as though an overly wet paintbrush had danced across the sky, layered with color upon color bleeding into one another and dripping across the east as far as an eye could follow. The colors faded then hung as striations carved into the sky; for a moment, the earth felt motionless as my feet were rooted to the ground. Then, it was gone. The day had broken through into alarm clocks and lunch plans. That was quite a beginning… left me to ponder.

Sun rising and setting, colors fading and glowing… they’re all both opposites of the same coin aren’t they? The hues are the same. At certain periods, the vibrancies are the same. And then, the days flow into night with clouds drifting, winds sweeping, rain washing, snow blanketing… every beginning has its ending and endings make room for beginnings. In this thread of thought, I’m drawn to Hemingway’s title “The Sun Also Rises”. That actually came from a bible quote it would seem appropriate to share with this piece. From Ecclesiastes 1:5, something to think about and release into: "The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose."

Designer Folding Screen

Tough, strong canvas

Nickel rivets on reverse

Panels fold accordion style

'Invisible' canvas hinges

Handmade to order

'Invisible' hinges for seamless effect

Durable wood frame armature

Long-lasting print & build structure

Sustainably printed

Choose from 2, 3 or 4 panels

Surface wipe only. But, being “grounded” is really a subjective thing, don’t you think?

Some people find themselves grounded in community, some in routine. No matter where I went, I always prided myself on being grounded… until, I wasn’t.

Quite honestly, there are certain whispers of memories I have that I ask myself, “Who the, what the hell was that?” When I speak of such misty memories, I ponder “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. Funny enough, for all the times it crosses my mind, it isn’t my favorite poem. The reason my mind draws back to Frost is for the way I was introduced to it. I still remember the 8th grade classroom with desks gathered in a circle, facing on another, and books crowded on whiteboard ledges, ready to be borrowed against weekly reading assignments. We took turns in the circle reading stanzas aloud then discussed it. This time, there was silence in the exchange when our teacher asked, “What else could ‘the road not taken’ mean?” I raised my hand and suggested the author was talking about the road HE had not taken.

That day was any given school day. And though I am by far not the most brilliant of my long-graduated classmates, I’m sure they remember as little about that footnote of a lesson as I remember it a new chapter opening. That was the day words gathered a new meaning for me, birthing a writer… made all the difference.

Now, looking back, having traveled those many different versions of myself, I see I was grounded. It was never about space and time for me, was the journey. It wasn’t about classic definitions of success for me, was the peaks and valleys. I look at this painting as an allegory of that journey, the journey we all have in our different expressions.

Designer Folding Screen

Tough, strong canvas

Nickel rivets on reverse

Panels fold accordion style

'Invisible' canvas hinges

Handmade to order

'Invisible' hinges for seamless effect

Durable wood frame armature

Long-lasting print & build structure

Sustainably printed

Choose from 2, 3 or 4 panels

Surface wipe only. But, I’ve always had a romantic notion of the word like the rich tapestry of life or the fates weaving our destinies in their loom and such… then, there’s the beautiful patterns in handmade woven objects, from baskets to platters to rugs to blankets. Each culture, each region in the world with its own signature color palette and recognizable style, it’s just a magical expression of humanity. For example, in traditional Persian crafting, tapestries and rugs are created with a deliberate flaw because only Allah is the perfect creator. How profoundly striking is that a commentary on their relationship with their god, the world around them?

All of these thoughts and ideas informed my approach to this pieces. I tried to emulate the weaving on the canvas but also give it movement. I incorporated the deliberate imperfections from the Middle East, sometimes called the Persian flaw. I made my interpretation a little more pronounced for composition purposes and a visual rhythm to counterbalance an otherwise static, formal structure. I leaned into the greens, thinking on the tapestry of life and growth and water flowing, then pulled in reds for their complimentary vibrations. I finished the piece with a high gloss sheen that I don’t normally employ but it really brought out the physical texture of each row the paint had carved and gave more depth to the parts of the painting I’d pulled away for the “flaws”. This theme of weaving is something I play with in my work often, as a focal or even incidental component. This is the first time I’ve stripped the weaving theme in a painting down to the basics, almost representational in it’s execution. I don’t know how many layers I put in a piece. The paint just gets thicker and thicker. On the sides of the piece, you can feel the indentations and buildout where the canvas is lost and the paint has taken over its shape. What excites me about this process is the unveiling. Even though the entire piece has the same wash upon wash, each space and the way it reads takes on a whole different character. There’s an echo in the colors because they are the same but the sections have their own, unique personalities. When I first finished this piece I thought about doorways and different portals. When I looked further into it, I realized it wasn’t about possibilities but present states of being. It can mean any things but is most commonly referred to being a target or motivation to attain a goal. On the other hand, it’s an opinion devoid of feeling or bias. When you think about it, those two definitions are completely contrary. The truth is, everybody has their own object and every opinion has its own motivation. That said, we’re all right in who we are and what we want to do, regardless the reasoning as long as we’re true to ourselves. This piece was inspired by a brick wall, the lines and texture, the immovable force that keeps a roof over our head and protects us from the outside elements. You can see this reflection in the rectangular overlay. An objective is much like that, when your dedicated to see it come to pass. I want. I desire. I am. These are all things that define oneself. I’d finished it the night before our weekly group meetups and the title was escaping me. The vivid ochre explosion juxtaposed against the cooler-toned, geometric background just makes it look ignited. The prominent feature itself does look like a neuron that’s been fired. And, since a synapse is the channel where such electricity occurs, I embraced the title.

British neurophysiologist and Nobel laureate, Sir Charles Sherrington, first used the term “synapse” in 1897 from the Greek words “syn” and “haptein” meaning “together” and “to clasp”, respectively. According to Britannica, a synapse is the site of transmission of electric nerve impulses between two nerves (neurons) or between a neuron and a gland or muscle cell (effector). The thing is, a synapse is the space between the nerves, where an electrical current passes through to relay messaging from nerve to nerve. It’s a name attributed to a nonconnection; but, what happens within that nonconnection is everything that makes us, US, and allows our corporeal vessels to work.

I have always been fascinated by the idea of “the space between”, long before the Dave Matthews song with the same title. It started when I was a kid learning about atoms, being told they were the building blocks of matter yet they never truly touched. There was something strangely profound about the idea that the very core of what makes us and everything around us that we know… well, nothing is connected because there’s always a space, both seen and even unseen. Even so young, I wondered, can really touch each other; can we hold one another? Then, the Dave Matthews song began being played. I realized that it is in that space where the magic happens… synapsis.

The space between

The tears we cry is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

The space between

The wicked lies we tell to keep us safe from the pain

Will I hold you again?

“The Space Between”, Dave Matthews, 2001

Designer Folding Screen

Tough, strong canvas

Nickel rivets on reverse

Panels fold accordion style

'Invisible' canvas hinges

Handmade to order

'Invisible' hinges for seamless effect

Durable wood frame armature

Long-lasting print & build structure

Sustainably printed

Choose from 2, 3 or 4 panels

Surface wipe only.
