I don’t know if it’s an inordinate amount of time compared to others but, as I look back, seems I’ve always been that way. I like long drives in big loops with the windows down, sunroof back and music blaring. So, it doesn’t matter whether I’m sitting in peace or in motion, just as long as I feel the outdoors and soak in the moment. Somewhere along the way, in that open space, I realized that the horizon stretches at sunset. Maybe it’s the light that cascades up into the endless sky, a gasping last breath… maybe it’s the outline of the horizon which backlighting creates, tapering into a whisper… either way, the horizon stretches at sunset.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut, have you seen a brilliant sunrise? It’s soft, rosy. It’s a tender, tumbling prelude like a symphony warming up before a concert. I once saw a sunrise that looked as a serenade. The glow grew as though an overly wet paintbrush had danced across the sky, layered with color upon color bleeding into one another and dripping across the east as far as an eye could follow. The colors faded then hung as striations carved into the sky; for a moment, the earth felt motionless as my feet were rooted to the ground. Then, it was gone. The day had broken through into alarm clocks and lunch plans. That was quite a beginning… left me to ponder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSun rising and setting, colors fading and glowing… they’re all both opposites of the same coin aren’t they? The hues are the same. At certain periods, the vibrancies are the same. And then, the days flow into night with clouds drifting, winds sweeping, rain washing, snow blanketing… every beginning has its ending and endings make room for beginnings. In this thread of thought, I’m drawn to Hemingway’s title “The Sun Also Rises”. That actually came from a bible quote it would seem appropriate to share with this piece. Traditional Persian rug makers leave a deliberate “flaw” in their design under the belief that only Allah in his creations is perfect. I bring up this concept because it is the exact opposite of what this piece, Kintsugi, represents and underscores the importance of embracing both.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKintsugi is a 400 hundred year old Japanese method for repairing ceramics and translates to mean “gold seam or repair”. When a vessel is chipped or shattered, artisans use a laminating lacquer process which finishes with highlighting the seams in gold or silver powder. The construct behind this process is a culturally intrinsic belief that there is beauty in what is the imperfection. The idea is that one should embrace the flaws within objects and within oneself. It reminds us that our scars are beautiful, our healing to be celebrated and the new form we create has a uniqueness that we only would have seen within ourselves if it weren’t for the resiliency we were able to summon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo bring it back to the Persian flaw juxtaposing the Kinsugi concept… we are all just a mess of mistakes we create or things that have happened to us, aren’t we? The thing is, a synapse is the space between the nerves, where an electrical current passes through to relay messaging from nerve to nerve. This piece was actually inspired by the Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado. I had lived in Colorado for decades and this place, the tallest sand dunes in North America, had always been on my bucket list. Like so many things and places I’ve wanted to do, life got in the way… that said, Covid gave us all room to stop and car camp so finally got to witness this grand vista and stomp in the sand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven with the wind slapping our faces, it was a\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003epurely joyous experience. There were families with sleds gliding down the slopes, picnics being had, couples laughing… 150,000 acres of pure joy and we only trekked to barely past the perimeter. I’ve been mesmerized by that trip ever since, hoping to return. I want to be better prepared, take a sled or cardboard. I want study the shadows and bathe in the sun, just beach it for a bit. But, until that return, I revisited it in this painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe idea of the wind moving those sandy mountains is fascinating so I read up a bit on wind movement and terms. A geographic surface facing the wind is called WINDWARD. The backside of that surface is called LEEWARD. The windward side on sand dunes is the smooth and flowing slopes while the leeward side is where the sand has the steep drop-offs. It makes sense because the wind is building up the sand then it gets too heavy so falls. This piece was actually inspired by the Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado. I had lived in Colorado for decades and this place, the tallest sand dunes in North America, had always been on my bucket list. Like so many things and places I’ve wanted to do, life got in the way… that said, Covid gave us all room to stop and car camp so finally got to witness this grand vista and stomp in the sand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven with the wind slapping our faces, it was a  purely joyous experience. There were families with sleds gliding down the slopes, picnics being had, couples laughing… 150,000 acres of pure joy and we only trekked to barely past the perimeter. I’ve been mesmerized by that trip ever since, hoping to return. I want to be better prepared, take a sled or cardboard. I want study the shadows and bathe in the sun, just beach it for a bit. But, until that return, I revisited it in this painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe idea of the wind moving those sandy mountains is fascinating so I read up a bit on wind movement and terms. A geographic surface facing the wind is called WINDWARD. The backside of that surface is called LEEWARD. The windward side on sand dunes is the smooth and flowing slopes while the leeward side is where the sand has the steep drop-offs. It makes sense because the wind is building up the sand then it gets too heavy so falls. I’m reminded of this with “diaphanous” because it’s purpose seems abstract. It describes, yet bares no concrete need. It seems a word strictly meant for poetry, a word of leisure and elegance. If one were to wear a diaphanous gown, it’s not to keep warm or for modesty or to go out gardening on a hot day. It’s the process of that movement, that vacillation between opposites. With this piece, I oscillated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis may seem like a simplistic composition but looks can be deceiving. This was actually one of the harder paintings I have ever approached. Size had most everything to do with it. In younger years, it was a big canvas that intimidated me. It felt so imposing with its broad, blank space. Even looking at a canvas of any larger size was suffocating, meaning it would suck out all the oxygen in the room. But, these days, a wide and open canvas is a space I can’t wait to dive into so trying a smaller canvas is a completely different universe. That was the point of this piece and the several blank canvases of this scale I have yet to paint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason I have canvases of all sizes is for the adventure of exploring the different atmospheres. I love the challenge, the whole “Here I go but where the heck am I going?” This anxious feeling was very present during the whole process of the piece until I just embraced it. The layers were constructed to express this struggle. In juxtaposing circles overlaying lines as well as the pattern visible within those circles, the composition has a certain surface tension. The tension isn’t only in the forms but also in the palette and empty space. Theoretically, the visual weight of the piece should be pulling the eye to the lower right quadrant because that’s where things are most busy, as it were. But, having all the negative space in the upper left quadrant framed by the circles, the composition finds unity and balance that’s satisfying.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s a universal question for artists that people ask and we ask ourselves, “How do you know when a painting is done?” With this piece, I definitely had that question over and over until I finally signed it. Like I said, I oscillated. But, like when we all oscillate, we always know which side we’re leaning towards. That negative space became a visual resting point that made the most sense. There’s a part of me that wonders whether this composition would work on a larger scale, then I know it could. I think I learned more in this piece than my recent larger work. This was actually one of the harder paintings I have ever approached. Size had most everything to do with it. In younger years, it was a big canvas that intimidated me. It felt so imposing with its broad, blank space. Even looking at a canvas of any larger size was suffocating, meaning it would suck out all the oxygen in the room. But, these days, a wide and open canvas is a space I can’t wait to dive into so trying a smaller canvas is a completely different universe. That was the point of this piece and the several blank canvases of this scale I have yet to paint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason I have canvases of all sizes is for the adventure of exploring the different atmospheres. I love the challenge, the whole “Here I go but where the heck am I going?” This anxious feeling was very present during the whole process of the piece until I just embraced it. The layers were constructed to express this struggle. In juxtaposing circles overlaying lines as well as the pattern visible within those circles, the composition has a certain surface tension. The tension isn’t only in the forms but also in the palette and empty space. Theoretically, the visual weight of the piece should be pulling the eye to the lower right quadrant because that’s where things are most busy, as it were. But, having all the negative space in the upper left quadrant framed by the circles, the composition finds unity and balance that’s satisfying.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s a universal question for artists that people ask and we ask ourselves, “How do you know when a painting is done?” With this piece, I definitely had that question over and over until I finally signed it. Like I said, I oscillated. But, like when we all oscillate, we always know which side we’re leaning towards. That negative space became a visual resting point that made the most sense. There’s a part of me that wonders whether this composition would work on a larger scale, then I know it could. I think I learned more in this piece than my recent larger work. Luck meant something different then and I find it an ever changing concept even now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuck, for me, is best defined with quotes these days, like Samuel Goldwyn saying, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” or the Seneca attribution of “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I guess it boils down to believing that we create our own luck. But, can that be the only reason such an idea is so important that it’s given a name, throughout history and cultures across oceans?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs I was finishing this piece, it was already sold and became a bit of a commission. I thought of this person, her family coin collectors and coins historically becoming talismans for luck. I looked up other talismans. What made those things bear significance, was it hope for or intention within? I imagined myself imbuing this piece with luck, through strokes of my paintbrush. I cannot say whether this piece will bring this person luck but I can say that I feel blessed that she had such immediate connection to this piece. I hope this blessing she gave follows her through this canvas and the lifetime they will now share. I thought of this person, her family coin collectors and coins historically becoming talismans for luck. I looked up other talismans. I cannot say whether this piece will bring this person luck but I can say that I feel blessed that she had such immediate connection to this piece. We took turns in the circle reading stanzas aloud then discussed it. This time, there was silence in the exchange when our teacher asked, “What else could ‘the road not taken’ mean?” I raised my hand and suggested the author was talking about the road HE had not taken.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat day was any given school day. And though I am by far not the most brilliant of my long-graduated classmates, I’m sure they remember as little about that footnote of a lesson as I remember it a new chapter opening. Each culture, each region in the world with its own signature color palette and recognizable style, it’s just a magical expression of humanity. For example, in traditional Persian crafting, tapestries and rugs are created with a deliberate flaw because only Allah is the perfect creator. How profoundly striking is that a commentary on their relationship with their god, the world around them?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of these thoughts and ideas informed my approach to this pieces. I tried to emulate the weaving on the canvas but also give it movement. I incorporated the deliberate imperfections from the Middle East, sometimes called the Persian flaw. I made my interpretation a little more pronounced for composition purposes and a visual rhythm to counterbalance an otherwise static, formal structure. I leaned into the greens, thinking on the tapestry of life and growth and water flowing, then pulled in reds for their complimentary vibrations. I finished the piece with a high gloss sheen that I don’t normally employ but it really brought out the physical texture of each row the paint had carved and gave more depth to the parts of the painting I’d pulled away for the “flaws”. This theme of weaving is something I play with in my work often, as a focal or even incidental component. This is the first time I’ve stripped the weaving theme in a painting down to the basics, almost representational in it’s execution.
